BIO | INTERVIEW

2008 - Dylan Ruskin about ‘Apocalyptic Feasting’

Hey! Your debut album 'Apocalyptic Feasting' is soon to be released. What can the people out there expect?
I would say if you like fast technical death metal you can expect a lot of it from our album. Also it will be in record stores almost anywhere that sells metal. So it shouldn't be too hard to find either.

Please tell your soon-to-be fans what BRAIN DRILL is all about.
BRAIN DRILL is all about playing super fast technical death metal at grind core speeds. Basically we want to write and make our music as crushing as possible but also make it so that the more simple listener can get into it too. This way everyone can rock out to it.

Your sound combines influences from bands like CANNIBAL CORPSE, JOB FOR A COWBOY and PSYOPUS. Pretty technical stuff. Please explain how your songwriting is like?
I do not think that JOB FOR A COWBOY or PSYOPUS are any influences of ours. Yes, they are on the same label as us but they are definitely not any of our influences, haha. But the writing process basically goes like this: I usually start out by writing the songs and finishing them completely. I then go over to Jeff’s house and we tab it all out on bass. We then program a metronome and put it onto a CD I then record guitar over the metronome and then give it to Marco for him to learn it by himself when he has time. After everyone seems to have the jist of the songs we get together and jam them out and Steve adds lyrics to them.

Especially Lord Marco Pitruzella's drumming is unbelievably fast. How does he do that?
Marco has been playing since he was 9 and he is 22 now. So he has quite a lot of experience. It was also a goal of his to become the fastest drummer in the world although I don't know if he is officially yet but he is getting pretty close. He also has an instructional DVD that he is selling. It shows all the techniques he uses and how to play them.

CANNIBAL CORPSE bass player Alex Webster said that you sound "pretty fucking sick". What do you think about this compliment?
We couldn't be more happy and excited!! At first when someone told us that we didn't completely believe the person. But then we went to their website and listened to their interview and sure enough he mentioned us.

Please explain the role myspace played for your band.
I would say myspace played a big role for our band. Alex Webster and many other people would not have known about us, had it not been for myspace. I think it is an excellent tool for up and coming bands to get their name out there. It's awesome to know that there is a website that you can use for free that advertises your band and people can actually listen and get into it all over the world.

Please name your alltime favourite albums and bands…

How would you describe BRAINDRILL to people who have never heard of you before?
If you are not aware of what it might sound like from the name then you are in for a shock, haha. Basically I would say that it is super fast technical death metal. If you are into bands like CANNIBAL CORPSE and NECROPHAGIST then you might like us, too. As long as you are into fast heavy music you might like us, too.
