2006 - Trevor Phipps reveals first details on the next album

Hey, Trevor! How are things at the UNEARTH-Camp? What are you up to right now?
Things really couldn't be in a better place. We just finished recording the new record and we are set to start another two years of non stop touring around the world.

You are about to release your new album ‘III: In The Eyes Of Fire” in august! What can you tell our readers about it?
This album is angry, aggressive, dark and heavy as all hell. Too many bands today are going for the metal verse with the big singing "pop" chorus in every song. We went the opposite route with this album with just relentless heaviness throughout the entire record.

What does this new album mean to you?
Our music means everything to us and this album is no exception. We poured our hearts and souls into making the best record of our lives and we are proud as fuck to stand behind it and tour our asses off once again.

What would you say are the differences between ’The Oncoming Storm’ and your upcoming effort?
This record is more organic and a bit more focused. We wanted to record a "live" feeling album as opposed to a polished inhuman metal record. Humans are not flawless and that gives us all character. We recorded with this in mind and only kept the takes that felt energetic and right. This record is heavy metal rock'n'roll with no apologies. It is in your face and crushingly heavy.

How was it working with Terry Date who also produced bands like PANTERA or DEFTONES?
Terry is a great guy and an amazing engineer/producer. I personally felt at total ease with him while doing my vocals. He had a ton of ideas to help tie this record together sonically. Plus, hearing story after story about Pantera, the Deftones and Soundgarden was rad. This guy has lived through a lot of heavy metal and hard rock history and it was cool to hear about it.

You’ll be playing this years Ozzfest – what makes it so special?
Ozzfest is always a good time. We play in front of thousands of metal and hardcore fans every day, we get to hang out with our fans and friends all summer long, we get to have BBQ's and drink beer pretty much non stop and we get to see some killer bands. What more could we ask for?

Will you be back in Europe, supporting ‘III: In The Eyes Of Fire’ after playing the Sounds Of The Underground Europe 2006 Tour in May?
We will be back in Europe and the UK shortly after Ozzfest. There are a couple different touring ideas out there, but we will for sure be back within a month or two of Ozzfest.

What are your current faves – did they influence your work on the new album?
I am really into the new ANIMOSITY record as well as album by IF HOPE DIES, THE RED CHORD, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, APIARYm BENEATH THE MASSARE and JOB FOR A COWBOY. As for influences on this record, we saw the current state of heavy metal and hardcore becoming a bit contrived and cookie cutter. We wanted to go the opposite direction and write the heaviest album that the five of us could. We want to prove to the fans, the industry, and to ourselves that bands can still sell records and tour the world by getting heavier with every record as opposed to writing pop metal bullshit and hoping you will appeal to the masses.

Any last wise words to say?
Shit no!
