2008 - Trevor Phipps about ‘Alive From The Apocalypse’

Hey! Your first-ever DVD ‘Alive From The Apocalypse’ is soon to be released. What can the people out there expect?
They can expect a full live show DVD from October of 2007, a documentary disc covering the bands nine year career complete with pictures, video, additional live performances, commentary from some of metal and hardcore’s elite, band interviews and a ton more. The European version also comes with a live audio CD from the DVD show.

What memories do you have about the DVD show?
A sold out show in a muggy club with us playing under some hot ass lights. Great show, hot as hell, lots of friends and a bunch of whiskey and Jäger.

Some of your stage actions really look dangerous. How often did you get away with injuries from stage?
I got knocked unconscious in 2003 at a festival in Pittsburgh when I headbanged forward and Ken was swinging the guitar down hard. He caught me on the soft spot on the top of my head and I went down like a ton of bricks and was bleeding everywhere. Good memories there… We have all been hurt and banged up in the past, but that just comes with the territory. If I don’t leave a show with a couple of bumps, bruises or scratches then I didn’t do my job right. We are all about letting every bit of energy out, both within and on the physical side, and sharing it with each other and the fans.

DVD 2 contains a documentary about your whole career. How did it feel when you saw your own steps towards success on screen?
I was proud. Very proud. Doug did a great job compiling all our footage and pics with the story of our band. The DVD really brought me down memory lane and gave me a real sense of pride for all our accomplishments thus far. I couldn’t be happier with this DVD.

A lot of famous musicians of the scene put their respect to you in interviews. How do you feel about that?
When your peers and idols have such great things to say about you and your band it is a bit overwhelming. To hear all those kind words spoken meant a lot to me and my band mates. There were parts of the DVD that got my emotions really going, especially when Vinnie Paul was talking about the good times we had with him and his brother on the Headbangers Ball tour in 2004. Just to hear him speak words of love and respect for us in that way is something I will always cherish.

You are one of the heaviest touring band outfits out there. What about your private life? Do you still have one?
Building a home life over the years has definitely had its ups and downs because we are gone sometimes up to nine months a year. That being said, we all have found the right people to balance our lives at home. I have a very loving wife, as does Buz and our current drummer Derek. We all have close friends and supportive families. So for us friends and family are what keep us sane and allow us to have happy private lives.

You are confirmed for this year’s Wacken Open Air, the biggest Heavy Metal party of the world. What are your expectations?
I expect for us to go out there and give the biggest Metal festival in the World the best UNEARTH show we can give. Wacken is something we have always wanted to be part of and we are finally getting the chance to play. Needless to say, but we are all very excited to be part of the tradition this summer.

Is there already anything that you can tell your fans about a new album?
There will be a lot more groove oriented songs on this record. On ‘III- In the Eyes of Fire’ we made a conscious effort to make an angry as all hell blistering fast album. This time around we want to slow it down a bit and give the fans something a little different. The groove is adding a more crushing feel to the heavy parts and it is allowing for some breathing room for the guitarists to showcase what they can do a bit more. More riffs, more solos and more hard hitting in your face UNEARTH. We are stoked on what we have so far.

Please put these terms in your own priority order and explain your choice: friends, family, money, music.
Family - Without family I would not be who I am or where I am in life. They are the main reason why I have enjoyed life as much as I have to this point. I am blessed with an amazing family.

Friends – Sometimes I feel good friends are similar to family. If your friends are really your friends, then they will stick by you through thick and thin. I am lucky enough to have people in my life that I can call real friends.

Music- Music has helped create much of who I am. From listening to my dad’s record collection of classic rock when I was a kid, to finding my own taste and love for music, it has helped develop my entire path in life. Without my love for music my life would be drastically different.

Money – I honestly don’t really give a fuck about money. Yeah sure it is great to get some money and have the ability to buy cool shit and own cool things, but if I really cared about money I would be doing something else with my life. I have been lucky to get to this point where my career pays the bills, but if I wanted to build my bank account I wouldn’t be creating music as heavy and brash as UNEARTH.
