2007 - Lee Harrison about ‘Spiritual Apocalypse’

Hey Lee! Congrats to your new album ‘Spiritual Apocalypse’! How do you feel now after all the work is finished?
Its a big relief to have it finished. It wasn't easy, but we got it completed and I think the results will speak for themselves.

It’s been a long time since your last album ‘Rise To Power’, three years. What did you do in between?
It usually takes us four years between releases so this one is pretty quick. It would be possible to write quicker I just don't know if it would be as good. We always work every thing up to a certain level of quality, so maybe it would. So much goes into making a record. I don't know if I could handle doing one every year and a half though.

’Spiritual Apocalypse’ turned out to be faster than your last albums. It goes back to the style you played on ‘Millennium’. How did it come to that?
Actually, that was what we said in the press release but it’s not really true. I think most people like the ‘In Dark Purity’ record and it would have been obvious to just say "oh, its going to sound like ‘In Dark Purity’", just to hype everyone up, but I went with the record that was our least selling just to confuse people. Haha, just trying to be not so obvious.

You have a new singer called Mike Hrubovcak. How did he come into the band? Can you tell us a bit about him?
Yeah, we actually met Mike awhile back when we played with DIVINE RAPTURE in Philadelphia a number of years ago in 2001. We really met him on the ‘Triumph In Black’ European tour when he was the vocalist for VILE. We liked the power he had with his voice and he's easy to get along with too.

You toured almost all places of the world. Recently you were in Mexico. Any memorable tour stories to share with your European fans?
Yes, we do travel and that is one of the coolest things about doing this. Mexico was really cool. MONSTROSITY has played there quite a few times before, so it’s always cool to go back. The first time we played there was with OVERKILL. That was a pretty big deal at the time. This last trip was with MARDUK, CATTLE DECAPITATION and SETHERIAL. MARDUK were cool but they didn't talk too much or hangout. They had a much longer flight, so I'm sure they were pretty tired. As for the stories you may have to wait for my book I'm eventually going to write. Haha...

Last year you toured Europe and played 33 shows in 33 days. Don’t you need day-offs?
No, days off are not so good. I mean, as long as things are taken care of and all we have to do is play for an hour the rest of the time we can hang out and do what we want, then its not a big deal. If you have a day off there is no one to hang out with and you end up spending your money on stupid shit. Plus, it costs the tour money to keep the bus for that day, so it’s better just to play every day. The main thing for me is having a shower everyday. That is important. As long as I get a shower everyday I'll tour forever ...haha!!

You have a headlining appearance at German Fuck The Commerce Festival coming up. What can the fans expect of the premiere of your new record?
Hopefully, everything will go as planned. We are putting together the new show now. There’ not going to be any huge pyro or any "cats" on the drum riser but we'll have a cool show for sure....

How would you describe MONSTROSITY with only three words to people who never heard of you guys before?
Brutal, tight and devastating!
