2006 - Travis Ryan about 'Karma.Bloody.Karma'
Hey! Your third album for Metal Blade, “Karma.Bloody.Karma”, will be released by the end of June. How does it feel?
Pretty good! We think it’s the best sounding one yet and it was really interesting to make. Has a lot of properties to it that we've never explored before.
Where are the differences to its predecessor “Humanure”?
Its a much more "out there" record. Less standard death metal, more experimental without boredom or lack of flavor. A lot fresher than “Humanure”. “Humanure” was like a pile of shit in the middle of the room with all the doors and windows shut. On “K.B.K.”, we opened those doors and windows to let the stench loose upon the earth!
You play extremely brutal Death Metal but you don’t use the usual gory zombie/horror/mass murder lyrics. Instead your lyrics deal with the real horror that the world has to face each and every day. Why?
I always appreciated bands like NAPALAM DEATH or NUCLEAR ASSAULTs lyrics. Much more substance than say just another brutal death metal idiot rehashing CANNIBAL COPRSE lyrics.
You already stated that the title “Karma.Bloody.Karma” has no religious meaning. What does it say instead?
Well I just didn't want people to think the cover and title was an attack on Hindus. It's not. It simply states that revenge can be brutal as well as just. I don't personally believe in karma, I've seen too many assholes get exactly what they want without deserving the smallest, minute fraction of it. But it works great metaphorically.
You are known for your vegetarianan attitude. How did it come that you became vegetarian?
I never liked meat and when you see where it comes from... Ugh! I don't know how people can eat that shit.
You are nominated for “PETA 2’s sexiest vegetarians of 2006”. What are your feelings about that? ;-)
Whatever... It's kind of dumb since we're kind of a funny looking band. They're just doing it because we're vegetarians in a band that they interviewed. As if we could actually ever beat Pam Anderson or Prince. Give me a break! Haha...
When will we see you touring Europe?
We're waiting for one of our albums not to be banned there in hopes that we can finally come over there! I'm getting pretty tired of answering emails from people in Europe wanting to see us! I just keep saying "this year!" so, hopefully this year!!!???
You are often described as a cross between CANNIBAL CORPSE and CARCASS. Do you like that?
I guess so... I think we're drastically different than both, but I can still see the connection. They're both bands I grew up listening and are definitely responsible for me getting into gore as a metal form. It's really great to finally be operating on the level they did when I got into them!
What are you current and alltime favourites and why?
Current: DEATH IN JUNE, BOYD RICE, anything related to LEVIATHAN and anything related to the GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR camp. Why? Because I'm a depressing person. Just read the lyrics on the new album! Hahaha... All time: CARCASS, because they changed my life forever. CORONER, because they were the first metal band to introduce me to my ambiguously dark side. SWANS, because I love them and anything related to them and finally, MAGMA, the greatest band of all time.
