2006 - Simon Füllemann about 'Kingdom'
Hey, Simon! Your fifth album (the second for METAL BLADE) will be released on May 19th. How’s the mood at Camp CATARACT?
Great! Couldn’t be better! On one hand we are really looking forward to the reactions on the new album, because we think it is really cool! For now everyone’s satisfied which makes us even happier. On the other hand we cannot wait to perform the songs live. We are very excited what the fans will think about it!
What may all listeners expect of ’Kingdom"? Where are the differences to ’With Triumph Comes Loss’?
Primary pure energy and brutality – pure CATARACT! We’ve made a big step forward if it comes to the vocals – no, not in thinking of whiny singalongs or songwriting. Fedi’s vocals are better than ever before and so he gives his very special mark to the album. During the songwriting we’ve been aware of writing real songs chorus, verse, bridge. It seems like there are not that much bands left that are able to write songs with the right kind of structure. We’ve improved this a lot from „With Triumph Comes Loss“ to „Kingdom“. The songs have become faster, harder and much more mature. Also we used a lot more melodies and additional stuff – but this you’ll have to find out yourself. And then – Tue Madsen’s production! What a blast! This man gave us a sound you’ll never find again in this kind of music in 2006! I am absolutely sure that this is 100 % CATARACT!
The special edition of the new album will be very comprehensive…
Absolutely! I don’t think that there are a lot of bands out there that give their fans two full length for the price of one CD. We really took a lot care of it! The regular jewel case itself is done very beautifully. Especially the very cool and unusual layout is an eyecatcher. Not only packaged music. It was very important to us to do both parts in proper way. The Digipack version doesn’t only feature an even cooler layout – there will be an additional bonus CD containing old songs, completely renewed and rerecorded. We wanted to show our fans where we come from and how we have developed. But it was clear to everyone of us that those old „new“ songs should sound like we would play them today. Turned out very cool! Besides those four songs there are six live songs recorded at the 10th anniversary Metal Blade-Party! High quality stuff! There you’ll experience our raw live power. Additionally there is a track that has never been released in Europe! A pretty cool collector’s piece…
Also you brought together a lot of stuff for your release show (on May 24th) –one week after the actual release- let us know…
Urghs, do I have to tell it all ?? Yeah, we will play a lot of new songs and stuff that we haven’t played for quite a long time. But we’ll only play that much new stuff on this one release show… then until autumn there won’t be that much new songs in our set. Also we will play a second set containing only cover songs. Be prepared! Everyone will get a present… but I won’t uncover that much – but like the digipack version – it will be a special experience! Pay us a visit!!!
What are your current faves? Did the influence ’Kingdom’?
First of all no current faves would ever influence our music at all. We are CATARACT and we have our unique sound so there are no new influences. Bands worth to give them a listen should be BLEEDING THROUGH as well as KATAKLYSM, IGNITE, CELCTIC FROST, SICK OF IT ALL, NEAERA etc etc…! Also there are all the other evergreens I listen to daily like PANTERA, HATEBREED or SLAYER. At the time I like THE ACCUSED and ONSLOUGHT pretty much.
It is planned to so some tattoo-specials for various magazines – what do CATARACT think about tattoos in generell? Meanning, choosing the motives…?
Right, I am really looking foward to it. It’s about time because we’re all “infected”! We really like it. If it comes to the meaning of it and choosing the right motives, I can only speak for myself. I always try to get a new piece that fits the principle of ying/yang, that contains good an evil or keeps the balance to another tattoo. Also a tattoo has to fit and form the body its been inked on. It has to fit. A good motive and a good tattoo artist is definitely necessary. I personally like Japanese stuff…
Another topic – liveshows! What will happen this year?
Play a lot! After releasing the new album we will do a lot of shows and after that we will do some festivals in July. In September/October we’ll do the really cool Hell On Earth Tour. After that there will be some gigs before we will do the Xmas Festival Tour in November! Then a few shows until the end of the year. Sometime there should be USA, Japan an Australia to do and a headliner tour through Europe in April 2007 is planned. We’ll see. I guess, it’s a good start and it looks like a lot of fun!
