2006 - Tim Lambesis about ’A Long March: The First Recordings’

Hey Tim, you released ’A Long March: The First Recordings’! Please tell our readers a bit about it…
The CD has 22 tracks that include everything we recorded before signing to Metal Blade. The first five songs are actually re-recorded versions of our old EP. We felt like those five songs were strong songs but never represented well in production until now. I also wrote liner notes explaining our history and other unknown facts about the recordings. The most impressive part to me is the new artwork. It is my favourite layout of ours so far. Jacob Bannon keeps outdoing himself.

When did you finally decide to re-release your early material? How did it come to this?
We decided to re-release the early material about six months ago when we realized that our fans were paying way too much for used copies of them. Since they went out of print the used price just kept going up. Our goal was to give our fans everything on one CD for a low price.

Are you satisfied with the result?
Yes. It’s a good combination of good songs with new production plus the real history of where we started. For those who have been following the band it is everything that missing all on one CD. I can’t say enough good things about the artwork as well.

How important were these two releases for you back then? What feelings do you associate with them?
Every release we’ve put out is full of the passion that is behind our band. Those early releases were limited production wise due to a lack of money and time, but we were very happy to get things started. All that Jordan and I wanted to do was play music full time and those records were the foundation of that.

What are your plans after releasing ’A Long March: The First Recordings’? Recording a new album etc…?
Before we go home we’ll do at least one more tour in Europe. That will be after headlining the Sounds of the Underground this summer in the US and Canada. We would like to go into the studio and record a new record this winter. Since we’ve been on tour so much we haven’t had time to write any new songs yet. I have a feeling everything will come together pretty quickly once we have some time to rest.

AS I LAY DYING is known for being a christian band – did you have any problems with that in the past since there is not that much christianity in metal …?
There were more problems when we first started. A lot of bands wouldn’t take us on tour because of our beliefs. There are a lot of stereotypes about the way Christians are and I can understand where those stereotypes come from. Now that we have been around for a while we have been able to prove ourselves to be different and genuine.

What bands are your current faves?
After doing the Taste of Chaos tour I’ve become a big fan of DREDGE. On the heavier side, I really like both of the latest CATARACT CD’s. One of my overall favorite records will always be METALLICA’s 'Master of Puppets'.

What else do you want to tell our readers?
We never anticipated so much interest in our earliest material and that is originally why we let them go out of print. I’m so thankful for the support we’ve had!
