2007 - Daniel Dlimi about 'Rise To Dominate'
Hey! Your new album ‘Rise To Dominate’ has been released. How were the reactions? What can the fans expect?
Great! Most of the fans and critics really like the album very much so far. For those who haven’t heard it yet can expect some real brutal but yet catchy death metal in the vein of DEICIDE, MORBID ANGEL and CANNIBAL CORPSE among others.
Where are the differences to your last album ‘Bleeding The False’?
Actually, the biggest difference is the production. One thing that was very clear when we recorded this album was that we wanted to have a raw and not so polished production. Compared to ‘Bleeding The False’ which sounds very dry and have small crispy guitars, this album has massive, fat guitars and a more organic sound. And there is no editing madness here. This is actually what AEON sounds like. Besides that, I think we are far better musicians and songwriters today compared to what we where back in 2003 when we recorded ‘Bleeding The False’.
Your sound pays tribute to Death Metal legends like CANNIBAL CORPSE, MORBID ANGEL or DECIDE. What do these bands mean to you?
Zeb, Tommy and I have been listening to these three bands since the early 90’s and they sure as hell have inspired us through the years. I have always preferred the US/Florida style of death metal before the typical European/Swedish one.
Alex Webster of CANNIBAL CORPSE seems to be a pretty big fan of you. What does this mean to you? How did you get in touch?
Yeah, Alex seems to enjoy our music pretty much. It feels a little bit surreal to have someone from a band that you have been listening to for the last 15 years standing there and praising our stuff. It’s very flattering and it makes me proud to say the least. I am not really sure how it started, but I think it was Erik at Unique Leader who asked us what band we would like to tour with if we could choose. We said CANNIBAL CORPSE. And since the guys at Unique Leader are good friends with Alex, he sent him a copy of ‘Bleeding The False’ and informed him that we would love to do tours with them. Alex obviously seemed to love our stuff and he/they made sure that we did get a spot on their European tour in April 2006.
Your album was mixed and mastered by legendary Dan Swanö. How was it to work with him?
Dan is one of the most professional people I had the opportunity to work with. We sent him the whole project as soon as we were finished with the actual recording. He started to mix one song at his Unisound Studio. After a few days we got a test mix of one of the songs. So we could listen to it and give him some feedback. Already, it started to sound really good. We had a couple of wishes that we emailed him and he continued to work on our change requests. A couple of test mixes later and a very “easy to deal with” dialogue through email he was ready to send us a test mix on the whole album. At this point it sounded awesome and all there was left to do was some small detail changes to make it perfect. So after about 10 days we had this killer mix/master in our hands. We are really pleased with the result and we sure as hell would love to do some more work with him in the future.
Please explain the role Satanism plays in your life…
I can only answer this question for me and not for the rest of the band-members. First of all, I am an atheist and I really hate all kinds of religions since nothing pleasant have ever come out of one. But if I had to choose a religion, it would have been satanism since it would fit my lifestyle the most. However, I don’t need any religion at all.
Please name your alltime favourite albums and bands…
This kind of questions is always hard to answer. Bbut to name a few albums that I really can’t live without, I would say:
CANDLEMASS – ‘Tales Of Creation’
OZZY OSBOURNE – ‘Bark At The Moon’
JUDAS PRIEST – ‘Painkiller’
DEICIDE – ‘Legion’
MORBID ANGEL – ‘Dominate’
CANNIBAL CORPSE – ‘Kill’
KING DIAMOND – ‘Abigail’
How would you describe AEON to people who have never heard of you before?
Brutal but yet catchy Christ-bashing death metal created with a typical American style. As you said earlier in this interview, that we pay tribute to legends like DEICIDE, MORBID ANGEL and CANNIBAL CORPSE if you would like. Then you probably get a hint of what we sound like.
