| WICHITA THUNDER SEASON IS UNDERWAY! |
Well, the 2008-2009 Thunder season is underway! Our front office worked extremely hard to fill the Coliseum on opening night, and we got the job done. We had over 9,000 fans packed into the arena as a sell-out crowd watched the Thunder battle the Oklahoma City Blazers. We hosted a tailgate party before the game and we couldn't have had better weather. Hundreds of fans came out long before the doors opened to prepare for the festivities. Our interns grilled complimentary hot dogs as the fans listened to live music from Wichita's own "Lucky People."
According to our research, we had the second highest opening night attendance for minor league professional hockey in the entire United States!
The atmosphere was electric as the Thunder players were introduced on the ice! We jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead, but would give way to the Blazers as they finished the game with a 5-1 win. Our rebuilding process continues with our new head coach, Brent Bilodeau. We'll probably take some lumps early this season, but Brent feels very confident that by midseason, we'll be right in the thick of things. Unfortunately, we suffered a huge loss during the 3rd period. Our newly named Captain and fan favorite, Mike Batovanja, suffered a season ending knee injury with a torn ACL. Not exactly the way we wanted to begin the season. Every team faces adversity, so we'll see how our guys respond. Nobody in our office accepts losing. It's very, very frustrating when we work our tails off to pack the building and the team doesn't put on a good show. We want to win on the ice as bad as any die-hard fan in Wichita!!!
Our lease negotiations with the new downtown arena are moving forward quickly, and we should have something finalized very soon. The people of Wichita are very excited about the Thunder being the anchor tenant of the new arena!

| SIMILARITIES BETWEEN HOCKEY, HEAVY METAL ABOUND |
(From NHL.com) Take a moment to think about all the great partnerships in life -- pairs that when one comes to mind, the other immediately and instinctively follows: Peanut butter and jelly, movies and popcorn, baseball and Cracker Jack.
These days, hockey and heavy metal is another symbiotic relationship to be included in that list.
Why do hockey and heavy metal fit together so well?
Mike Levine, a member of the Canadian power trio Triumph, has one answer, delivered tongue-and-cheek: "Other than (both are) usually played by a group of guys in hockey rinks who travel around a lot?"
Seriously though, these two disparate entities have become interwoven in the last little while. When you scratch the surface, hockey and heavy-metal music -- heck, any kind of music -- have more similarities than you might think.
